How is a Bio.design pool built?

Shaped from the ground, not dropped into it. Seven layers — each with a precise technical job — behind one natural-looking pool.

A Different Approach

So… how is it built?

A Bio.design natural pool is built differently from a traditional swimming pool. Instead of starting with a rigid prefabricated or reinforced-concrete shell, the process begins with the ground — shaped to the project and to the character of the site.

That makes it possible to go beyond standard pool geometry and build each project entirely to measure, following the natural contours of the land for a seamless link between water, garden and landscape.

The patented system allows organic shapes, beach entries, seating areas, submerged walkways and varied depths — adapting each pool to the space, to the people who will use it, and to its surroundings.

Behind that natural look, though, is a precise sequence of layers, materials and processes, each with a specific technical and structural role.

Seven steps, from soil to water

01 · Groundwork

The excavation shapes the pool

Everything begins with the design — and then with shaping the ground.

The excavation does far more than make room for the water: it already defines the pool's outline, depths and character. Swimming zones, beach entries, 45° walls, built-in benches and submerged walkways all take shape here.

With no prefabricated shell or concrete box to fit, the design is free to follow the lie of your property.

02 · Separation layer

The protective fabric

Once the ground is shaped, a protective geotextile fabric is laid over the whole excavation.

It separates the waterproofing from the soil beneath, cushions it against stones and roots, and leaves a clean, even surface for the stage that follows.

03 · Waterproofing

Waterproof liner & system installation

A flexible EPDM liner is laid over the fabric. The membrane follows every contour of the excavation and forms the pool's waterproof base.

This is also when the technical systems go in: inlets, suction points, underwater lighting and any extras such as air-massage jets or waterfalls.

With everything plumbed and wired, work moves on to the structural and finishing layers.

04 · Structure begins

Reinforcement mesh for the base layer

With the waterproofing complete, the structural part of the pool begins.

A first reinforcement mesh is installed over the liner, shaped to the same curves, preparing the surface for the structural coat.

05 · Patented system

The structural base coating

The structural base coating — part of the patented Bio.design system — is applied over the first mesh.

It is made from specially formulated resins and quartz. According to Bio.design's published technical data, it offers twice the flexural tensile strength of structural concrete.*

The result is a strong, continuous structure without a traditional reinforced concrete shell.

06 · Load distribution

Intermediate structural mesh

A second, intermediate mesh further reinforces the layered system.

Set between the base coat and the final layer, it adds strength to the whole shell, spreads loads and prepares the surface for the finish — while keeping the freedom to build shapes a traditional pool can't.

07 · Look & feel

The finishing layer

The last stage gives the pool its final appearance: a distinctive textured surface in colours and textures chosen to sit naturally in your landscape.

The signature expansion joints are completed here too. Technically, they absorb stresses from natural ground settling — and in our climate, freeze–thaw movement — helping to prevent cracks. Visually, they become a design feature, in custom colours and patterns that play across the floor and the water.

Once the finishes and systems are complete, the pool is filled and becomes part of the garden.

The Result

A pool integrated into the landscape

Excavation, protective fabric, waterproof liner, structural meshes and multiple coating layers: behind the natural look is a precise, patented build system.

It goes beyond the traditional concrete structure — giving us more freedom to design shapes, depths and wellness areas, and to build a pool shaped in harmony with your garden.
